How will the future be for air line travel if the FAA considers tougher regulations for battery transportation? Not only can further restrictions effect passengers that would like to bring on their laptop and other small electronic devices, but regulations could also effect world wide imports/exports requiring manufacturers to pay higher shipping fees. These fees no doubt will be passed along to consumers.

PC Worlds article below talks about the possible tightening of airline regulations on class 9 hazardous material in which batteries have been exempt from for so long. Read up to learn how this can effect you!

How Can You Maximize Your Laptop’s Battery Performance?

Most laptop batteries last 18-24 months with average use. This is equivalent to 500-800 charging cycles. Average use of a battery will eventually drain the battery’s ability to hold a charge or there may be some adjustments that you can make to get better performance from your battery. However, if your battery is old and is getting less than half of it’s original run-time, then it may be time for a new battery. If you use your laptop battery everyday, use it for gaming, video streaming and are on WiFi constantly, the laptop will drain the battery run-time and over all life much quicker. Such heavy use can render the battery dead in as little as one year with heavy laptop use. Get maximum performance from your laptop battery by following a few suggestions below:

Condition New Batteries
New laptop batteries come in a discharged condition and must be fully charged before use. It is recommended that you fully charge the battery to 100% and let the battery discharge completely on its own. Repeat this procedure 3-4 times to break in the battery and so each battery cell can reach it’s full charging potential. Then condition or exercise the battery at least once a month. Li-Ion battery need only be drained to about 40%, not a full discharge for monthly maintenance, however constant shallow charges should still be avoided. Sometimes it’s not conditioning that the battery needs, but a battery recalibration. Constant shallow charging will confuse the battery and it may need to be re-calibrated. For more information on how to recalibrate your battery visit this link. BIOS Says to Recalibrate My Laptop Battery.

Avoid Memory Effect
Keep your laptop battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once a month. Li-Ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect, but they too still need conditioning at least once a month with a discharge to about 40% and should not be overcharged.

Remove Battery when Using AC/DC Power Source
Laptop batteries are in constant charge and discharge state when you have the AC/DC adapter plugged into the computer and using the computer with the battery installed. Removing the battery while using the AC/DC adapter will help prolong the life span of the battery since most last 500-800 charging cycles or 18-24 months. These frequent shallow charges do not allow all of the battery cells to properly condition for optimum battery performance.

Don’t Mix Chargers & AC/DC Adapters
Not all laptops of the same brand use the same type of charger/adapter. Do not assume that the same charger your friend uses on his Toshiba will be the correct one for you model of Toshiba. Every laptop requires it’s own specific specs and both the in and out source specifications Amps and Volts must be correct for your laptop model and battery chemistry. Mixing or using the wrong charger can damage the battery and the laptop. You may not notice any difference at first, but the laptop or battery may show signs of a problems later. Do not use a swollen battery. Carefully remove and contact a local recycle center or repair shop for advice on discarding the battery.

Reduce or Set Your Laptop to Battery Saver Mode
Most laptops allow you to adjust the settings to battery saver mode. Turning down the monitor brightness and turning off programs running in the background will also help in reducing drain on the battery. Remember that WiFi, Gaming and Video Streaming eats up a lot of battery power. We recommend using the AC/DC adapter when you can if on WiFi, Gaming and Streaming Video.

Keep your Batteries Clean
Cleaning dirty battery contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol will help maintain good connections between the battery and the electronic device.

Exercise the Battery
Condition the battery at least once a month. If your battery has not been used for a long period of time, perform the new battery break in procedure described above (condition).

Laptop Battery Storage
NiCad, NiMH and Li-Ion batteries self-discharge during storage Batteries need to be broken in before use. If you don’t plan on using the battery for at least a month or more, the battery should be stored in a cool dry place. Do not leave the battery inserted in the laptop for long periods of time with the AC/DC adapter plugged in constantly charging the battery. Not only will this reduce the battery’s life, it can over charge the battery and damage the laptop.

Did you know that if you have not “exercised” your battery for say 6 to 12 months, chances are permanent damage has already occurs and you will likely not be able to recover from the high discharge due to no use. Lesson here is to exercise and condition your battery at least once a month to keep your battery in good condition.

Although Li-Ion batteries are not affected by memory loss as the older NiCad and NiMh batteries are, they do still need conditioning maintenance. Be sure to store Li-Ion batteries in a cool and dry place and regularly condition with a drain to about 40% to retain charging abilities. Frequent charges help maintain a Li-Ion battery compared to the need deep conditioning of the NiCad and NiMh batteries

NiCad batteries tolerate charging in extreme temperatures compared to other battery chemicals, but should be done within 5°C and 45°C or 41°F and 113°F but 10°C to 25°C or 50°F to 77°F is better for the battery. However, NiMh batteries do not like extreme temperatures for charging. They cannot be charged fast below 10°C or 45°F, and cannot be charged slowly below 0°C or 32°F.

This is a newer type of Li-Ion battery. It uses a solid polymer electrolyte that looks like a plastic film. It contains a gelled electrolyte which is less susceptible to leaking and uses a bag type enclosure rather than a rigid metal case. This leads to a lighter and thinner battery and it is considered safer because the gelled electrolyte is less likely to leak. It is also more resistant to overcharge.

Li-Ion has quickly become the emerging standard for portable power in consumer devices. Li-Ion batteries produce the same energy as NiMH batteries but weigh approximately 35% less. This is crucial in applications such as camcorders or notebook computers where the battery makes up a significant portion of the device’s weight. Another reason Li-Ion batteries have become so popular is that they do not suffer from the memory effect. They are also environmentally friendly because they don’t contain toxic materials such as Cadmium or Mercury.

The main difference between NiMH and NiCad batteries is the fact that NiMH batteries (the newer of the two technologies) offer higher energy densities than NiCads. In other words, pound for pound, NiMH delivers approximately twice the capacity of its NiCad counterpart. What this translates into is increased run-time from the battery with no additional bulk to weigh down your portable device. NiMH also offers another major advantage: NiCad batteries tend to suffer from what is called the “memory effect”. NiMH batteries are less prone to develop this dreaded affliction and thus require less maintenance and care. NiMH batteries are also more environmentally friendly than their NiCad counterparts since they do not contain heavy metals (which present serious landfill problems).
